Math in California schools

California Common Core math standards

California public schools teach to the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, which emphasise understanding and problem solving alongside procedures. Lessons can follow the same standards your student’s class is working on.

California state testing (CAASPP)

Students in grades 3-8 and 11 take the Smarter Balanced math assessment as part of CAASPP. Tutors can help students practice the multi-step, explain-your-reasoning style of question these tests use.

Traditional or integrated high school math

Depending on the district, high schoolers take either the traditional sequence (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2) or Integrated Math I, II and III. Tell your tutor which course your student is in and share the syllabus.

Math for UC and CSU admission

The University of California and California State University “a-g” requirements include at least three years of college-preparatory math, with a fourth year recommended. A tutor can help students stay on track through the sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Do your tutors follow the California math curriculum?

Tutors can work from the materials your student’s school uses. Share the textbook, unit or course name, for example Integrated Math II or Algebra 2, and lessons will follow it.

Can tutoring help with CAASPP math tests?

Yes. Tutors can review the grade-level skills the Smarter Balanced math test covers and practice multi-step problems where students explain their reasoning.

Do tutors come to our home?

No - AllSmart is fully online. Lessons are live video sessions in your browser, so your student can meet with a tutor from home without anyone driving across town.
